BSCC Special Trade Index

Dataset Description

The Special Trade Index, published by the British Chamber of Commerce for Switzerland in 1951, differs fundamentally from the BSCC’s regular membership directories. Conceived as a practical reference work for Anglo-Swiss trade, it is organised into three interconnected sections: United Kingdom principals, Swiss agents and representatives, and commodity and service groups. A system of cross-references links these sections, documenting not only individual firms and goods but also the commercial relationships connecting British producers and suppliers with their Swiss representatives.

The dataset preserves this relational structure, making it possible to reconstruct intermediary relationships, product associations, and transnational commercial connections at the level of individual firms. No comparable cross-referenced Trade Index is known to have been produced by the Chamber for another year. The network reconstructed from these cross-references can be explored interactively under Showcases.
