The Trade Index dataset is derived from thirteen surviving issues of the British Chamber of Commerce for Switzerland’s (BSCC) membership directories, published between 1921 and 1958. The indexes document firms connected to the Chamber and contain, in varying combinations, company names, addresses and locations, economic sectors, products, commercial specialisations, and related information. Their structure changed considerably across the period: entries could be organised alphabetically, by sector or product category, or through combinations of these systems, while the amount and type of information recorded also varied between editions. Taken across several decades, the indexes provide a longitudinal record of the composition, geographical distribution, and economic profile of the BSCC’s membership and make it possible to trace changes in individual firms and in the Chamber’s membership structure over time.
