British Chambers of Commerce Abroad

British Chambers of Commerce Abroad, 1834–2024

The interactive map traces the geographical expansion of the British Chambers of Commerce Abroad from the first recorded foundations in 1834 to 2024. These Chambers were not dependencies of a single parent organisation, but locally established organisations that formed part of a wider British commercial network. The map follows their cumulative expansion across successive periods, from the earliest foundations in Asia through the wider expansion of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the concentration of new foundations around the First World War, and renewed expansion from the late twentieth century into Eastern Europe, the Gulf, Central Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. The underlying data were compiled from archival records, contemporary publications, trade directories, and secondary literature. Where no precise foundation date could be established, the earliest documented reference was used.

The map can be explored by moving through the years to follow the expansion of the network over time. Use the zoom and navigation functions to examine particular regions and select individual locations to view the Chamber and its recorded year of foundation.
